It does not take a graphic design specialist to know the difference between a good and a bad website. But, it does take an everyday viewer to instantly scan & never come back. Its mind-blowing how many websites today are just overload with visual and no sense of directions or reason. Graphics on a webpage is the most important thing that can “hurt or make” your website. So if your graphics are poorly design and layout, it will not matter how amazing your product or service is, for no one will ever want to take the time to visit your site. Thankfully we are here to help you guys out, here are five easy techniques that can break or help your website. Welcome to 5 Skills Web Graphics Can Hurt or Make Your Website.
1. Readability and Kerning
Before we mention how important readability is to a site, we must know how to use it. So what is the empty space between the lettering? Thats my friends is called Kerning. Kerning means the space that exists between lettering. Though this may seem like a something to ignore, Kkerning is actually a key component for any website. For example, if viewers have to struggle to read your text, they will immediately leave. Incorporating enough space between lettering & words provides our eyes to rest as it moves over the text. When this technique is not applied, it becomes irritating to us because our eyes does not get that rest. Here are other useful methods to use for readability:
- Knowing the difference between your text and background is key. Contrast should be noticeable but not extreme.
Applying all capital letters make text harder to read. Why? BECAUSE ALL ARE THE SAME SIZE AND HAVE A BLOCK LOOK, giving the viewers a hard time to read your information.
- Also keep in mind even though simple text can be readable, you do not always have to do it. What you must do is know what font matches your message and brand. For more about what font to use feel free to look at our What Font to Use article.
2. Know Your Hierarchy
Knowing your hierarchy and how it works is an important element in web graphics, for it gives the viewers a sense of direction and where to go.
In these perfect examples, the eyes are drawn to either the biggest text or to the most expressive image component of the page, our eyes than move to the other items. Great visual designs always uses hierarchy and is always effective in brining attention to the audiences.
3. Design for the Right Audience
Check out these two great examples of how a children’s concert is being showcase. It is amazing how two how different designs give different expression, yet having the same information.
Every designer and business owner always has to ask themselves for whom the website, page, and content is being designed for? For example, the darker design announcement would match perfectly for an orchestra concert hall because it has a more sleek and enlightened look (black background and scripted text). In contrast, children would not even bother to look at this design, for they would rather have a design that has a more colorful and playful text look. Knowing your audience is crucial because if you can’t grab their interest than you won’t be able to make a conversation and succeeded.
4. Choice the Right Color Scheme
The choice of color must draw perfectly to the audience. There are many studies related to color scheme and how it effective people’s mindset, so great design should take that into account for their design. For instance, Red-Orange, Black and Royal Blue attracts impulse shoppers like Fast Food, Outlet Malls and Clearance Sales. Navy Blue and Teal attracts shoppers on a budget such as in a bank and department stores. Versus Pink, Sky Blue and Rose attracts traditional buyers like in clothing stores.
Visually, lets take a look at the colors used in the following web pages. Both examples fit the “brand personality” because they aim nicely for their audiences and mood/tone of the products.
Cadillac wants to appeal to a cultivated, upper-class audience because after all, their cars are costly, so having one makes a statement that the viewer has “made it.”
In contrast, Toy R Us is a site aim for kids, so because the amount of colors are applied in the webpage it creates a high animated and amusing reaction, giving the audience (the kids) to persuade their parents to buy the items for them.
5. Your Ally… White Space
When too much is packed into a design, the audience become bewildered and confused. Remember you want to design something that is easy to understand and easy on the eye, so do not design something where your audience do not know what to see at or what to read first. Keep it simple with white space, for it allows your audience to relax and pay attention to what you want to sell or offer them.
In the end, graphic design is about creative establishment from your web graphics, but it is also about applying the fundamental of designs. Remember, have a template and plan that works for the message. All designs must incorporate brand stability, target audience, and user-friendly experience. Though visitors want a badass design, they also want simplicity design so that they can decide the value of what they are looking at. After all, you are giving them a choice, either buy your product or pass… So don’t make them confuse.
